As a child, Poirier’s earliest memories were the scent of linseed oil and paints. Her mother Eleanor is an artist, and there was always an easel set up in their Boston, Massachusetts home.
Poirier has fond memories of Boston. And it’s where she met Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, who recently treated her to a special backstage pass to his concert.
Now a Naples, Florida resident, Poirier has developed her own passion for art, experimenting in a variety of mediums. She is the proud owner of K & A Design, where she is turning what she loves into a pretty profit.
“It’s really starting to take off,” says Poirier.
She honors her Naples surroundings in her art, incorporating found art, crushed glass and shells into her beach-inspired paintings, signs, and refurbished furniture. Mermaids, crabs, seahorses, dragonflies, shells, and beach scenes are typical subjects for Poirier, whose love for the ocean and all things related to it inevitably show up in her work. “I love the ocean,” she admits. “Who doesn’t?”
Poirier is a good example of someone who is doing what she loves. Her art is an expression of her own tastes and fascination for all things nautical. She enjoys a range of styles from bejeweled to shabby chic to beach-worn and faded, but don’t try to put her in a box, or she just might surprise you.
Poirier loves taking an old piece of furniture and turning it into a work of art. For instance, she’ll find an old stool and either paint it with a beach-inspired scene or top it with grouted tile in the design of a dragonfly. She’s open to doing custom work, and can even do pet portraits.
But art is only part of her life. Poirier also works as a companion/personal concierge for a woman who uses a walker and thus requires additional assistance with some aspects of daily living. She does all the grocery shopping, cooking, cleanup, and serves as a chauffeur for a busy schedule of activities.
What got our attention most about this amazing woman is something a little more personal about Ashleigh Marie Poirier. You see, we consider her something of an unsung hero. When her sister Marcie passed away from cancer 13 years ago leaving behind her infant son Kyle, Poirier took him in and lovingly raised him as her own son. We know it can’t have always been easy for her as a single mother to do that, and we applaud her for stepping up and taking responsibility during what must have been a difficult time for her personally. That takes a special kind of person and shows the kind of character, maturity and self-sacrifice to which we all aspire to attain.
Naples Noteworthy is all about shining a light on interesting people who are doing good things in the community, sometimes quietly in the less glamorous but no less important cultural landscape of our own homes. Poirier raised a fantastic son who is a boy scout and understands what personal integrity and honor are all about. That goes a long way towards making Naples a better place.
We commend all the parents out there who are doing their best to raise children of character in our city. What you’re doing is so important. You’re raising tomorrow’s citizens and leaders, and we applaud you for the precious time you spend with your children now, shaping them, loving them, correcting them, and guiding them on their path to adulthood. In a world where sadly many children are neglected, unsupervised, and unloved, it’s wonderful to see the difference responsible parenting makes.
Did we mention Poirier’s a knock-out? Yes, as a final thought…this classy beauty isn’t like most women you see today, conjuring up memories of days when women still wore dresses and heels, who knew how to show off their curves without showing too much. Poirier reminds one of those wonderful starlet icons from days gone by, bewitching beauties like Sophie Loren and Marilyn Monroe.
And yes, gentlemen, she’s single.
