What makes Linell King, M.D., so different from other physicians here in America? The answer is his focus is on wellness rather than disease. And that’s a paradigm shift in thinking. What he’s managed to accomplish in his work is to identify the essential principles of wellness and vitality that we all need to live life to the fullest. He then provides a method for incorporating those essential principles into your life in simple and sustainable ways.
Dr. King’s best-selling book, Mastering Vitality: 7 Simple & Sustainable Steps to Lose Weight, Live Pain Free, Energize Your Life & Gain Power Now, if not an award-winner for the longest book title you’ve ever seen, should be for perhaps one of the most important books you’ve ever read. At first glance you think, this is a gimmick. That was our first take. We almost dismissed Dr. King.
We are glad we didn’t.
In fact, after reading his book and talking with him, Naples Noteworthy has named Linell King, MD the Most Wellness-Focused Physician in Naples.
Vitality is what we all want. It’s living life with energy, being strong and full of life, able to do everything you want to do. But in fact, most of us are living lifestyles that are actually leading to disease. King gives this sobering statistic, “On average, illnesses and diseases are approximately 40% advanced in your body before you ever experience your first symptom.” That means, right now, the choices that you’re making are already impacting your future. Are you going to wait until you experience a crisis and a diagnosis before you do something, or are you interested in taking care of yourself now?
Most likely, you already know you need to do something about your body. You just aren’t able to enjoy life the way you want to. Maybe your clothes don’t feel comfortable. Maybe you can’t go out and do certain things because you’re not in good enough shape. Maybe your weight is stopping you from enjoying life in a number of ways. And if that’s true, you know that what’s going on inside your body can’t be good. You’ve got to do something, because the consequences of doing nothing are disastrous. You will end up with one disease or another. Eventually, you will end up in the ground.
Heart disease, diabetes and cancer* are all preventable diseases. But that means your destiny is in your hands–so that gives you the power to determine your future.
The Cause: Making Sure People Know
We wondered why Dr. King has such a passion for delivering his message of wellness and vitality to people. We see him speaking everywhere, to people of all ages–adults, children, senior citizens. His story is a personal one, and goes back to his own father, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. At the time, Dr. King was in his residency at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
When he learned of his father’s diagnosis, he immediately took a leave of absence to be with his family, knowing that the prognosis for pancreatic cancer was not good. He took his father to an optimal wellness clinic in San Diego, and while they were there, King learned more about health and wellness than he had in all his four years of medical school.
This was a pivotal realization for Linell King.
At one point, his father, Richard Clinton King, looked at him and with sunken eyes said, “If only I had known about this sooner.”
From this time on, Dr. King would devote this life to making sure that people did know about health and wellness, if he had anything to do with it.
The Book: Mastering Vitality
Naples Noteworthy was completely on board with embracing a life of vitality. The question was, how do you do it? How do you go from where you are now–which for some of us, is living a life of inactivity, poor nutrition, irregular sleep patterns, and bad habits–to one that’s more like the life Linell King is living? (Because the man is a walking poster boy of his book. Talk about vitality to the max: Dr. King is healthy and fit, and his wellness and vitality practically drip from his body. And ladies: yes, the doctor is single.)
The King broke it down for us in seven simple steps.
#1 – Have Clarity About Where You Are and Where You Want to Be. Get specific. If you want to lose weight, how much weight do you want to lose exactly, and why do you want to lose it? Where do you want to be? Visualize yourself there–put yourself there. If you want to lose 110 pounds, see yourself at that ideal weight and what you are doing at that weight. What does your life look like, at that ideal weight? What action can you take now to put yourself closer to that ideal?
#2 – Use Emotional Leverage to Help You Succeed. Without leverage, nothing can happen. In order to get where you want to be, you need to know why you want to be there. Leverage is all about examining how much staying the same is going to cost you down the road versus the benefits of making lifestyle changes now. If you are overweight or living an unhealthy lifestyle, refusing to make changes now will result in unpleasant, serious, perhaps fatal consequences that could be avoided. Making those same changes will also produce many positive benefits in your life. Having a good understanding of those costs and benefits of not changing versus making healthy changes will go a long way towards helping you succeed.
#3 – Identify Your Power Personality. This is one of the more interesting parts of Dr. King’s work. He believes we all have a power personality, a part of ourselves that has all the answers, a confident, self-assured part of ourselves that is basically unstoppable. If you look back on your life, you can probably identify a time when you felt good about yourself–when you were at your best. That time, that “you” of that time–is your power personality. You need that power personality to move forward. And you need to retire the impotent, self-sabotaging part of you that has been operating up until now.
#4 – 7 Essentials You Need to Live A Vital Life. Here is the knowledge you need to make vitality a reality for you. These seven essentials are necessary for mastering vitality. They are:
Oxygen. This essential step is all about breathing properly. Dr. King shows you how to use your entire lung capacity to breathe and how most of the time we breathe very shallowly, failing to take advantage of this essential.
Water. The body is mostly made of water and it is used for all sorts of vital functions. The consequences of dehydration are disastrous. By the time you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. King emphasizes the importance of hydration and suggests a simple way of monitoring your water intake: drink enough water so that your urine is clear.
Food. Of course we know we need food to live, but Dr. King stresses the importance of eating living foods, foods that are not processed and are in their raw, natural state. He recommends the 70/30 rule: 70 percent of your diet should be made up of fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, leaving everything else to fit in that 30 percent–meats, breads, nuts, seeds, dairy, desserts, whatever.
Movement. Your body was made to move. It is essential that you engage in daily activity–and make it something fun!
Rest. Your body uses sleep time to reboot, recharge, and regenerate. It’s when you sleep that your body repairs itself and performs almost magical transformations. We even learn while we sleep! You need rest and adequate sleep in order to function well and to live a life of vitality. Dr. King outlines some excellent suggestions to help you learn how to wind down before bedtime. One of his own personal routines is never to watch television or to allow anything negative to enter his mind when he is getting ready for bed. Those minutes before sleep are important–fill them with positive imagery.
Sex. Sex is essential to health and vitality and has many important benefits, including lowering blood pressure, relieving stress, elevating mood, improving long-term memory, improving sleep, minimizing pain, boosting the immune system, decreasing the risk of heart disease, boosting libido, reducing the risk of prostrate cancer, improving bladder control in women, increasing intimacy, increasing tone, and promoting a more youthful appearance.
Spirit. A connection with the Divine is essential to vitality. People who seek to communicate or commune regularly with God, to That Which Is, to the Creator of All Things, to the Light, to the energy life force that permeates all known reality, are on the road to mastering vitality.
#5 – Develop Rituals to Embed the Principles into Your Life. This step is all about applying what Dr. King teaches into your everyday life. The way you are going to make any change happen in your life is by developing rituals and integrating them into your everyday routines. This allows you to control your environment rather than letting it control you. It’s proactive rather than reactive, and it doesn’t have to be complicated.
#6 – Make Your Plan Sustainable and Fun. The key to making this work is making it fun. For instance, for movement, why not just turn on some music and dance? That’s fun, right? Keep it simple. One of our Naples Noteworthy writers is doing bellydancing. It’s fun, and she’s making an investment in a future relationship. You also need an accountability partner. The best and fastest way to be sure you’ll succeed is to have a coach–someone like Dr. King himself.
#7 – Invest Yourself Emotionally, Mentally & Financially. How much you invest in terms of time, money and emotions will determine your level of success.
This is just a condensed, snapshot view of what’s in Dr. King’s book. We recommend you read it for yourself and take advantage of what he’s trying to teach. Our own Naples Noteworthy staff has committed to taking on the steps outlined in the Mastering Vitality plan, and we look forward to seeing some positive results–and are, in fact, seeing them already.
