About Adorable Monique
Color. That is the first thing you notice when you encounter the art of Adorable Monique. Her art is infused with bright, vivid color and bold designs. Though living now in Naples, Florida, she grew up in Honduras, and the country left its influence on her art in many ways. Whether it’s a parrot or a tropical scene, a lily pad or a woman in prayer, allusions to Honduras pervade the canvas and leave one captivated. Her ceramics are decidedly contemporary and unique, unlike anything you have seen before. Adorable Monique is very young, with a bright career ahead of her.
Naples Noteworthy was able to get to know Adorable Monique during the time leading up to this feature, and found her to be someone very active in volunteer work with a heart for those less fortunate. She is keenly aware of issues of social inequality in the world, particularly in Honduras, where she spent so much time during her youth. She is grateful for her education and the opportunities she has had, particularly with regard to pursuing her interests in art. She received instruction in fine arts from La Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán.
Naples Noteworthy: When did you first begin doing art, and what type of art was it?
Adorable Monique: From an early age I found art to be my favorite activity to do. I also found it to be a way to express my ideas even though others didn’t or couldn’t understand what I intended to portray. I was happy to know that I knew. Art was also a way of personal escape. I do remember my mother always made a way for me to have crayons, markers, and paper, so she did like for me to draw and color. She did make it clear not to draw or write on the walls. A very important aspect of growing up was that she would take my siblings and I to visit museums so we could learn to appreciate all aspects of art. When I grew older, I decided to pursue my education in art.
Naples Noteworthy: What is your favorite medium to work in, painting or ceramics, and why?
Adorable Monique: I would like to say both; at the moment I do paint more often. I’m looking forward to having a larger studio space so I can alternate more often with both mediums.
Naples Noteworthy: Your paintings are so full of color. What inspires this? Is it your experiences in Honduras?
Adorable Monique: I find that color is capable to boost our lives. I enjoy seeing and appreciating the colors that are found in nature as well as everywhere else. My experience in Honduras has inspired my use of color. In Honduras, I admired the diversity of traditions and culture. Many women weave their fabrics in bright and vivid patterns, creating lovely designs. In the north coast, women take pride in their colorful attire. All of these aspects have inspired and continues to inspire all of my work.
Naples Noteworthy: Tell us a little about your childhood in Honduras. How do you think this has influenced your art?
Adorable Monique: I came to learn much in how to appreciate the simple things as I did see much adversity and poverty from my surroundings. Growing up was fun but there were moments that we also faced hardship. Some days there was no water and some days no electricity. When I work on my art, I do find my experiences in Honduras reflect on my canvas or other mediums. I intend to portray the essence of people, nature and more in my work. Living in through all the situations, it is very helpful to know that there is hope. There is a deep meaning that I share with the viewer. I do see beyond the apparent reality and transmit my personal vision onto the canvas.
Naples Noteworthy: Please describe the way your art relates to your spirituality.
Adorable Monique: I find art to be a gift. I am blessed to be able to share my vision with so many. I have also found it to be a way to reach others and encourage them to find their own inspiration. There are so many ways that an image or a word can provoke change. I have had children and adults identify with a piece of artwork and by having received an art workshop they have been liberated.
Adorable Monique: To promote finding the meaning beyond the color.
Naples Noteworthy: Is your family supportive of your artistic endeavors?
Adorable Monique: My family has always been supportive and even in times when I have wanted to give up, they have stood by my side. My mother is my true admirer; she has been like a guardian angel.
Naples Noteworthy: Your ceramic work is especially unique. Where do you get your inspiration for them?
Adorable Monique: I find my inspiration in the human figure and I transform these ideas into shapes and forms in which can relate to the inner value and life transformation that lies within.
Naples Noteworthy: Do you have a favorite artist?
Adorable Monique: I have always admired Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. There are also other contemporary artists that I find inspiring as well.
Naples Noteworthy: What is your philosophy of life?
Adorable Monique: Those who give will always have. I truly believe we must be a reflection of what we wish to see.
Naples Noteworthy: Do you have any other hobbies or activities you like to do? Music you especially like?

I do wish to have more time to do more but I do feel very happy with what I am able to do. As for music, I have a varied preferences as it depends on my mood but I like jazz, classical, instrumental, marimba, ethnic and other genres.
Adorable Monique: Most of the time I have engaged in projects as an opportunity or for a prize, maybe not knowing much of the process but I find it interesting when I begin to research as it is always a major challenge and exciting to learn and provide a completed project in which I succeed. There are other projects in which I apply and win a prize. I do give my best every time. It gives me personal satisfaction and also a good recommendation to do my best.
